German Schoolgirls Killed on Class Trip - "It Looked Like an Attack," Says Eyewitness
Tragedy in the Alps: Two German schoolgirls were killed and several others injured when their bus crashed in Switzerland on Tuesday.
The bus was carrying 49 students and four teachers from the Humboldt-Gymnasium in Potsdam, Germany, when it crashed into a rock face near the town of Sierre in the canton of Valais. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
Two of the students, both 16 years old, died at the scene. Six other students and two teachers were seriously injured and taken to hospital. The remaining students and teachers were treated for minor injuries.
An eyewitness to the crash, who was driving behind the bus, said it "looked like an attack." He said the bus was traveling at high speed when it suddenly veered off the road and crashed into the rock face.
"It was like a bomb had gone off," the eyewitness said. "There was smoke and debris everywhere."
The Swiss authorities have launched an investigation into the crash. The bus driver has been arrested and is being questioned by police.
The Humboldt-Gymnasium has expressed its condolences to the families of the deceased students and has offered support to the injured students and teachers.
The German government has also expressed its condolences and has offered assistance to the Swiss authorities in the investigation.
